The 50,000th Bösendorfer Grand is as close to flawless as pianos go in terms of shape and aesthetics. It was made to commemorate Bösendorfer’s 185th anniversary by blending the neoclassical Vienna visage with an excellent sound.
Theophil Hansen, the Wiener Musikverein concert hall designer, and Anton Grosser both made pianos for the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867. Both of the instruments they made are, in a way, the godfathers of Opus 50,000. The use of gold is a key aesthetic element in the piano’s design. The golden interior of the piano, which is covered in gold leaves, pervades the instrument’s body. Two golden caryatid figures ornament the front of the instrument, influenced by the golden caryatids that still grace the performance hall of the Wiener Musikverein.
